Riding the currents as we approached Ft. Jefferson at Dry Tortuga National Park, I was amazed at the site of this monumental construction positioned 70 miles west of Key West, FL. Ft. Jefferson is an imposing fortress that stood at the crossroads of trafficking waterways to strategic ports along the 19th century Confederate Coast. Ironically it's colossal cannons were never fired.
